Kids toy storage bookshelf cabinet that sorts bricks, figures, picture books and craft bits into separate open compartments instead of one deep box. Between six and nine cells means a child can see what is in each one and put things back without an adult directing the whole operation.
The unit is moulded in plastic and assembles from flat panels, measuring 80 centimetres long, 35 deep and 30 high - low enough that a small child can reach the top and set something down on it. Open cells rather than lidded bins is a deliberate choice, because a lid is one more step and one more step is where tidying up usually stops. The plastic panels wipe clean after paint, glue or spilled juice, which fabric bins never really do.
It works along a living room wall as the tidy-up point at the end of the day, or in a bedroom as a low bookshelf a child can use alone. Keep small toys and loose parts away from babies and toddlers, and supervise young children around the unit - never let a child climb on it or pull it over. Its low height also keeps sightlines clear across an open-plan room.
