It carries the short list of things you want within arm's reach overnight, a phone, glasses, a book and a drink, and it does it without claiming any floor area at all.
The shelf is wooden and folds flat when it is not in use, so it drops down to hold things and sits back against the bed frame or wall the rest of the time. That folding action is what makes it workable in a room where the walkway between bed and wardrobe is already tight, and it means the shelf disappears rather than becoming another edge to catch a hip on.
